A maintenance workflow for deciding when to update, merge or retire an older article instead of producing a near-duplicate.
An older article may need a correction, a broader rewrite or no change at all. A traffic decline alone does not prove the content is “decaying”; query demand, competition, seasonality and measurement changes also matter. Review the page and the reader's task before creating a replacement article.
Diagnose the page
Compare the current title and opening answer with the queries bringing impressions. Check whether product facts, screenshots, API instructions and outbound sources are still accurate. Read competing results only to understand changed reader expectations, not to copy their outline. Finally, inspect whether another page on your site now serves the same purpose.
